The capital of the province of Brabant-Wallon, Wavre is equidistant from Brussels and Namur. Mainly commercial, the town is served by a major road network and surrounded by leading industrial zones. As early as the 13th century, Wavre was an agricultural region alongside a large urban agglomeration that grew up around regular markets. The establishment of the first industrial park in the Dyle valley around 1930 laid the foundations for the city's industrial development. The city has preserved its pedestrian streets, such as Rue Charles Sambon and Belle-Voie, and its rural sites outside the urban center. The city is home to Belgium's largest amusement park (Walibi), a number of hotels and a lively folklore. In terms of architecture, the town hall, housed in the church of a former Carmelite convent, boasts a beautiful stained-glass window. Notre-Dame de Basse-Wavre is distinguished by the title of basilica, which it obtained only in 2000. Wavre is also the birthplace of the poet Maurice Carême, author of children's books, while Limal was the birthplace of Cubitus, the most debonair dog in 9th art! Finally, Wavre is also the center of the Brabant Ardennes, whose landscape is a harmonious blend of urban and rural areas. Castles and religious heritage, green spaces that put the Brussels suburbs to one side, walking areas such as the Bois de Beumont with its centuries-old trees, museums and cultural sites, strolls in the pedestrianized city center: the region is rich in discoveries.
