This small village is only two train stations away from Alishan; its covered market meanders through narrow streets where you can discover local specialties every meter, such as hayu (a kind of fruity jelly) or round cakes filled with meat, red beans or pineapple. Apart from the train and the locomotives, the bento - a wooden lunch box loaded with meat, vegetables and starchy foods - is what the city is famous for, due to its Japanese heritage. Fenchihu also offers good accommodation options, somewhat removed from the crowds that can be rife in Alishan. Staying there is advisable if you are motorized
