With its magnificent coral reefs, seawater springs, white sandy beaches and cheeky colours, the green island or Lyudao has all the assets to establish itself as a major destination. But before becoming a popular destination, this tropical island was infamous for its prisons. Indeed, it was in one of them that opponents of the regime were sent to until the 1980s. Today, the Human Rights Memorial bears witness to the abuses and atrocities. The green island has only 2,000 inhabitants (for 16 km²) and a third in low season. For tourists, it's a little piece of paradise lost.
