There are three prisons on the island, only one of which is open to the public. This is Green Island Lodge (in the village of Gongguan) which served as a detention centre for opponents of the regime until the lifting of martial law. Within the prison grounds, where you can still visit the small cells, stands the Green Island Human Rights Memorial on which all the names of the former inmates are marked. A museum reveals the harsh conditions of imprisonment, the abuses suffered and, above all, stresses the extreme necessity of living in a democracy.
