Two hours drive south of Taichung is the pleasant and green forest area of Hsitou, also spelled Xitou. Well known to locals but often ignored by tourists, it is in fact a great excursion. It also provides an overview of Taiwan's environmental protection efforts, as Hsitou is part of a much larger entity known as the National Taiwan University Experimental Forest. Numerous sports activities and marked circuits keep the youngest children and their parents busy. A few hotels and restaurants have opened in the area.
