North of Pingtung (about 30 km away), Maolin Park (which stretches from the village of Maolin to Dona) offers a unique spectacle of mountain scenery, waterfalls, suspension bridges and the presence of the aboriginal Rukai tribe. Although tourist activity is growing, Maolin is still wild and set back from the classic tourist trails, making it a place full of charm. The village of Dona has some beautiful traditional houses, and is a good stop for its thermal springs (carved into the rock). The region suffered terribly from Typhoon Murakot in 2009, which washed away many buildings. Tourism has declined since then, but is gradually recovering
