Of all the cities in Taiwan, Chiayi is certainly not the most beautiful. As soon as you leave the station, you find a somewhat sad atmosphere, far from the lights of Taipei or the overrated luxury of Taichung. Most travellers pass through it in transit, on their way to Alishan or other areas. And yet, things change very quickly. By restoring several old - and beautiful - Japanese wooden houses in which the craftsmen have taken refuge, the city is beginning to attract the curious.
