Fishing and tourism are the main sources of income for islanders. The three major islands, Penghu, Baisha and Xiyu, are connected by bridges. Xiyu is by far the most beautiful, with restored Fujian houses, Xitai Fort (1887) and a beautiful coastline. Wang'an Island, further south, is known for its sandy beaches and the endangered green turtles that come here to lay their eggs.
