Located on the top of Mount Kophinas in the west, Kapetaniana offers a breathtaking view of the wild Asteroussia massif and the Libyan Sea. Inhabited since the Minoan period, it became an important spiritual center during the Christian period, having attracted by its geographical isolation ascetics and monks. In 1744, it will be deserted, seriously affected by the plague. Life resumed in the early nineteenth century, when the inhabitants of the village Asfentou of Sfakia settled there, driven out by the Ottomans. Its name is therefore due to the armed leaders of its new inhabitants, the Kapetanioi (captains), who fought for the liberation of Crete.
