On the way to Phaestos, Mires is an important center of about 5,000 inhabitants. If you are traveling by bus, either from Heraklion or Rethymnon, you should stop here if only to make a connection. It is a good place to stock up: many stores around the main road, post office, two banks (with cash machines), supermarkets... Nothing special to see or do, but it is a lively town with a big market on Saturday morning. On the other hand, there is no particular interest to stay there, the places are rather noisy and congested. If however you are stuck, the Olympic hotel will do the trick.
