From Humahuaca, you can explore the Puna by going off the main road. At Abra Pampa, we take the RP 7 in the direction of Rinconada. The landscapes are grandiose, and you will feel the immensity of the Puna plain at a height of almost 4,000 meters. This road runs along a famous but still little visited attraction: the Laguna de Pozuelos, named after the small village nearby. If you are driving in a rental car, take precautions: gasoline, provisions, and a good map are highly recommended; but above all, ask the locals for an idea of the state of the road (whatever happens, it will be bad, the trick is to know how bad!). The pink flamingos. This lake of disproportionate proportions is the refuge of thousands of birds (about 30 different species, including the great pink flamingo) that enjoy a royal peace. In season, there are about 25,000 flamingos, of the southern type (migratory) but also two species endemic to the Puna, the Parina Grande and the Parina Chica. When to go. The best time to go is between March and April, when the rainy season is over and you can see the famous flamingos! Later they fly away to other horizons and only come back the following year.
