San Fernando is the capital of the province of La Union, nicknamed "ElYu" by locals and regulars (from its acronym L.U. pronounced in English). Don't know La Union? It's the surfing capital of the island of Luzon. For the past decade, young Filipinos and an increasing number of foreigners have been flocking to ElYu to catch waves and enjoy the surfing atmosphere. Bohemian-chic coffee shops, trendy bars, restaurants and hotels abound, in a vibe halfway between Siargao and Boracay. San Juan, a small town just north of San Fernando, is best known for its surf beaches, while Bauang is much appreciated for its scenic beauty.
