Located in the northeastern Golan Heights, straddling Israel, Syria and Lebanon, Mount Hermon rises to 2,814 meters. The western and southern faces have been under Israeli control and administration since the country conquered the Golan after the Six-Day War. The summit lies on the border between Lebanon and Syria. It is home to the country's only ski resort, open all year round for a wide range of activities (skiing is only possible in winter, of course; the rest of the year, hiking and other non-skiing mountain activities are on the agenda). Access to the resort is by road no. 98 only. The Golan Trail (in Hebrew, Shvil HaGolan) crosses the Golan Heights from Mount Hermon in the far north of the country to the Jordanian border, south of Lake Tiberias. It's a 120 km trail, relatively easy apart from a few inclines, most of which is also suitable for cycling and horse-riding. On foot, it takes around 5 to 7 days to cover the entire trail. Many points are accessible by car and public transport, enabling shorter hikes to be made by choosing individual sections. The best season is spring, followed by autumn. Summer and winter are trickier because of heat and rain. There are several watering holes and campsites along the route.
