26 km from the coastline and 850 m above sea level. A small village of the Shuf, Beiteddine, «the house of faith», owes its fame to the Palace of the People, a jewel of Oriental architecture, formerly called the «palace of the Amir Bachir». Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking a verdant valley, the palace is one of the most visited sites in Lebanon. A national symbol for those who believe that its founder, the Emir Bashir, is also the origin of the Lebanese entity." Above a deep ravine is one of the most dazzling Moorish palaces that I have been given to visit. I walk through its gardens, its rooms, its baths, its superimposed galleries, its light arcades, its patios where fontaines fountains, square towers and crenellated, the green masses that mingle there. A wonderful stay! What are the annals of such a place, both prison, fortress, harem, whose buis and cypress gardens breathe death and joy? These are the first impressions of Maurice Jacquemin in 1914 during his visit to Beiteddine Palace.
