The history of the village of Atlit is linked to the difficult story of Jewish immigration to Israel. The Jewish village was founded by pioneers in 1903, on land purchased by Baron Edmond de Rothschild to support the Zionist settlement at the beginning of the last century. Over the first decades, many Jewish settlers and immigrants came to populate the area, even more so with the rise of Nazism in Europe. It was at this time that thousands of illegal immigrants were arrested on these shores by the British, and detained in the Atlit camp. Today, the site has been turned into a museum, where visitors can learn more about this history.
