Less than 2 km west of the center of Remate, on the shores of the Petén Itzá lake, this natural park of almost 650 ha of tropical forest is Guatemala's smallest biotope. Declared a protected area in 1981, it was named after the hill overlooking the lake - whose shape is reminiscent of a crocodile's mouth - from the top of which you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. Although the Mayans once used this land for farming, today it is home to small-scale banana, corn and sugarcane plantations.Above all, like the rest of the Petén, the area abounds in a wide variety of plant and animal species: in all, it is home to 80 species of animal, including 28 mammals. Sapo trees, cheese trees with gigantic roots, mahogany trees, cedars, superb orchids, toucans, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, ocelots, crocodiles, butterflies..
