The Calusas Indians were the first inhabitants of Pine Island, surrounded by mangrove swamps and three aquatic reserves. Very authentic, it gives the impression of diving into the past. One is attracted by its rustic nature where fishing and agriculture are the main activities. Many artists and writers have also made Pine Island their home. You can admire the small multicolored galleries while crossing the small village of Matlacha (pronounced "Matlaché"). You can enjoy clams, oysters and fish from Pine Island Sound as well as mangoes, lychees and vegetables grown on the island
