In the late 1990s, commercial fishing declined in Matlacha. The inhabitants then decided to paint their houses with the colors of the rainbow. This transformation made the fame of this small city with a unique charm which is summarized in a long street where are aligned these small colored houses. Fishing is still a major activity here, as evidenced by the fact that the Matlacha Bridge is known as the Fishingest Bridge in the World. Many artists have also settled here, and you can easily spend the day browsing through their galleries, but also kayaking in the mangrove.
