Legend has it that Ponce de León named the largest island San Ybel to celebrate the beauty of Queen Isabella of Spain. The second island was named after the women who were taken prisoner there by the pirate Jose Gaspar. Today, Sanibel and Captiva are connected to Fort Myers by the Sanibel Causeway. Their white sandy beaches and their rigorously protected fauna and flora invite you to take a break. The shellfish lovers will observe very rare specimens. Unfortunately, part of the Sanibel Island and the Sanibel Causeway were destroyed by Hurricane Ian in September 2022
