The Big Cypress Nature Preserve was established in 1974 to preserve the extraordinary richness of the local flora and fauna. It was also intended to protect the surrounding area of nearby Everglades National Park. The name of the reserve was not chosen by observing the size of the trees, but by the incredible amount of cypress trees present in the area. They make up about one-third of the reserve's 294,112 acres. In addition to the cypress trees, the reserve is made up of wet meadows, small sandy islands, pine groves and mangroves. Water is an essential factor in the development of the area.
