But where is the Fort Myers fort? It no longer exists! It was named after Colonel Abraham C. Myers. At the time, it was an important base with a pier, a 305 m long wharf and about fifty buildings. It was located between Hough Street, Monroe Street and Second Street. The city was turned to agriculture before developing with the arrival of the Atlantic Coast Line train. Today Fort Myers has the charm of the Florida of yesteryear. Edison and Ford had established their winter residences there, which became museums. In September 2022, the city was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ian, a category 4 hurricane.
