A region much frequented by high-level athletes for the benefits of training at altitude, and the former home of the Moroccan half-founder Hicham El-Guerrouj at the time of his splendour and his Olympic and world medals, Ifrane and its park, 60 km south of Fez, occupies, over 53,000 hectares, almost all of the western portion of the central Middle Atlas.
Famous for its cedar and oak forest, Ifrane Park has a relief composed of medium mountains made of limestone. Land of forests, beauty of its landscapes: Ifrane is a jewel, and Moroccans are increasingly aware of this.
The park is inhabited by large populations of macaques and Berberian deer, a species reintroduced in the early 1990s. Some raptors and the red-footed crayfish also live there. Between 600 and 700 plants have been identified by botanists.
