The lake of Whalen marks the boundary between the canton of St. Gallen and that of Glarus. It is superb, with a beautiful blue colour and especially little frequented. By road, the south shore is crossed, but the view on the lake is spoiled by the railway. On the other hand, walking paths can be discovered in all its splendour. The most beautiful and most original of the walks on the lake is to take the pier in Murg, cross the lake and spend the day, or even more on the other side, on the north shore. This bank, completely devoid of road access, remained wild and superb. Less poetic, also with a pretty view of the lake from the Bad Ragaz motorway - Zurich which overlooks it. If you arrive from the east via the motorway, you have to take the Flums exit, to follow the lake from Walenstadt (superb view from the Fratten tunnel), or the following exit, Murg, to be in central position. However, it is best to cruise on this lake with beautiful mountains, from the small historical town of Weesen to the falls of Seerenbach, in Betlis, or to Quinten, where you expect comfortable restaurants, placed on the edge of the water and offering delicious fish specialities. The line boats of the Fjord Lake company are in service all year round, however limited in winter on the link from Murg to Quinten. Gastronomic cruises are regularly programmed, sometimes with musical accompaniment.
