17 km west of Silistra. This nature reserve was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1983. It protects an important freshwater lake for migratory bird varieties. The reserve covers 600 ha and houses 150 species of wetland birds, many of which are threatened and protected, including pelicans and wild geese. It hosts the plegadis ibis, the grey @, the white spatula and the richest colony of Dalmatian pelicans. Local wildlife also includes 39 mammal species, 6 species of fish, turtles, snakes. The site is served by regular buses from Silistra.
