Ruse or Rousse (180,000 inhabitants) is one of the largest river ports in Bulgaria, the largest on the Danube and the capital of the North. The bridge over the Danube, Dunav Most, provides the land connection with Romania through a huge former border post. It is said that Ruse is the most European city in Bulgaria. It is above all a clever mixture of Bulgarian, Romanian and Austrian cultures. The main square is particularly elegant and the city center is lively and modern. In the 19th century, Ruse was a cosmopolitan, merchant and intellectual city and the gateway to Europe for Bulgaria. It keeps rich vestiges of the Belle Époque, but also of the other periods which marked its architecture. Today, it displays a particularly rich and varied heritage. Its center alternates classical, baroque, Renaissance, gothic and rococo buildings. The urban landscape is also marked by the presence of large green spaces and, of course, the Danube, which gives Ruse the appearance of "little Vienna". The most beautiful buildings are called "the golden dozen", including the old theater, the music school, the Catholic church, the EC or the house of architects.Among the museums, we can note the Regional Museum of History, the Museum of Urban Life, the house-museum of Zahari Stoyanov or the National Museum of Transport, which is unique in Bulgaria. In the city there are also cultural events, such as the Ruse Carnival, the March Music Days or the Autumn Days of Art and Science.
