It is here that the Danube completes its role as a border with Bulgaria and flows northwards into its delta. Like Giurgiu, Călărași is a crossing point to Bulgaria and, like Giurgiu, it's a grey, uninteresting town that you'd rather leave quickly. With a population of 60,000, the town is focused on the metallurgical industry and has little to offer tourists. There is, however, the Lower Danube Museum (muzeul Dunării de Jos, strada Progresului 4), where archaeological finds are on display. It also has an ethnography section.
