Fossano is divided into two parts, the upper town and the lower town. It is a university centre and home to schools of higher learning, and is also an industrial town, particularly in the field of pastry-making. Its heritage is important and includes many palaces and some fifteen notable churches, including the 18th-century cathedral, in neoclassical style, adjoining a much older campanile (14th-15th centuries), which has been elevated to the rank of minor basilica. But its most imposing building is the castle, at the foot of which a palio is held every year in June, during which the seven borghi of the municipality compete for a weekend.
