Mondovì was founded in 1198 by the inhabitants of Vicoforte, who, because of their hatred towards their lord, the Bishop of Asti, took refuge on a hill to found a town, hence the name of Monte di Vico, then Mondovì. In 1290 it was granted communal autonomy, but was soon occupied by the Anjou, Savoy, Visconti, Marquis of Monferrato, French and Austrians. In 1800 the villa fell under French rule until the fall of Napoleon. The centre of the town is divided into two parts: the old, elevated Piazza and the more modern Breo below, connected by a funicular.
