Vicoforte, 30 km from Cuneo, owes its fame to the majestic sanctuary-basilica Regina Montis Regalis built in the 16th century by the great architect Ascanio Vittozzi on the orders of Duke Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy, who is buried there with other members of his family. In 1733, Francesco Gallo designed its huge elliptical dome, and the four bell towers by Camillo Riccio date from the late 19th century. Next to it stands the Cistercian monastery, an active and welcoming spiritual centre. Vittozzi also designed the palazzata, the semi-octagonal buildings that surround the square in front of the church, intended to accommodate pilgrims.
