Benbecula is smaller and probably less attractive than its two neighbors. Indeed, Benbecula has a long military history. An airfield to the north, built during World War II, became the Hebrides' rocket control center. Established during the Cold War, it is now Benbecula Airport. The military base established in 1958 is one of the main employers of the island, it is the test base of South Uist missiles. Benbecula is the air gateway to the southern Outer Hebrides through its airport. It is linked to Stornoway (35 min) and Glasgow (55 min) via Loganair(www.loganair.co.uk).
