Beaten by the waves, Eyemouth straddles Scotland, the open sea and England. Its maritime heritage is very present, both in its activities and in its mentality. On October 14, 1881, a terrible catastrophe befell the community when a gigantic storm killed 189 fishermen. To the north, there is a superb wild coastline around St Abbs. Coldingham Bay is a popular surfing spot in the summer months. From Edinburgh, Eyemouth is accessible by the Border Buses 253 (1h50) or by train via Berwick-upon-Tweed, before continuing on one of the lines that connect the two cities (1h15).
