The foundation of its influential cathedral made St. Andrews the Catholic capital of Scotland in the Middle Ages. In 1410, the country's first university was established and became the third oldest in the English-speaking world, after Oxford and Cambridge. It is one of the 25 oldest universities in the world and remains one of the best. More than for its religious weight or its academic excellence, the town has gone down in history for its star sport, golf, which was officially codified here in 1754. Saint Andrews is a destination full of character and charm, with its historic streets and romantic waterfront. With its vibrant student population and heritage, it is delightfully British and endearing.
