Built on the banks of the River Tay, Perth is a pleasant, green city that turns its attention entirely to its quays, where elegant waterfront facades stand tall. It has a population of 45,000. It is nicknamed "The Fair City" after Sir Walter Scott's 1828 novel The Fair Maid of Perth. Mainly visited for its nearby Scone Palace, the city center boasts several buildings of great architectural and historical interest, including St Ninian's Cathedral (1850) on North Methven Street, the Fair Maid's House, one of the city's oldest houses (1393), and St John's Kirk (1126) on St John's Place. It was here that John Knox preached his famous sermon against idolatry in 1559. A number of excellent bed & breakfasts and restaurants can provide an extended stay, should you wish to use it as a base for exploration. At the very least, Perth is worth a half-day stroll.
