Huasca de Campo, 40 km north-east of Pachuca, was founded between the 1760s and 1780s, around the work of transforming the ores in the haciendas de beneficio. To wash, crush, separate and extract the metals and then melt them into ingots, a phenomenal amount of water was needed, which was lacking in the mines of Real del Monte. The famous Count of Regla, who dominated the region, decided to found the so-called Haciendas de Beneficio in the area of present-day Huasca, which were in charge of the entire process of transforming the rocks extracted from the mines of his gold and silver vein: he had the haciendas of San Miguel Regla, San Antonio Regla and Santa María Regla built. The haciendas survived his death and were later taken over by an English and then a Mexican company. In Santa Maria Regla, the mill stopped working in 1906. The village of today has retained the charm of its golden age: cobbled streets and a pretty square with wooden porticoed houses. It is surrounded by mountains with a cool climate and two or three natural sites that are worth a visit.
