Founded in 1607, San Sebastián del Oeste is a pretty little village lost in the middle of the Sierra Madre mountains, about 70 kilometers from Puerto Vallarta (1 hour and 15 minutes drive). With less than 7,000 inhabitants scattered in the surrounding rural communities at the moment, it has the look of a ghost town. Yet the beautiful surrounding nature, the charm of its cobbled streets and old houses make it a worthy destination. An American built a hotel in the old mines, the Hacienda Jalisco, which has served as a refuge for many celebrities, and which can be visited even if you don't spend the night there.
