Located 125 km from Villahermosa, on the border with the State of Veracruz, the archaeological site of La Venta is one of the oldest remains of the Olmec civilization and of the Mesoamerican region: its apogee was between 900 and 400 BC. La Venta is considered by many to be the precursor of the great urban developments of the cities of the subcontinent (north-south orientation, staggered pyramid base). As the region is relatively poor in rock, basalt stones were mainly used to create giant heads, altars and steles, some of which can be seen today in Villahermosa, at the Parque Museo La Venta.
