Xochicalco, in Náhuatl "the place of the house of flowers", was one of the most important pre-Hispanic centres during the Late Classic period. The city filled the void left by the fall of Teotihuacán and was inhabited between 700 and 900 AD, until Tula became the new power in central Mexico. The city is built on a hill, a strategic position that allowed both the xochicalcas to defend themselves from possible invasions and to observe the stars. The site is accessible by public transport thanks to the buses that leave Cuernavaca for Miacatlán. You can then walk or take a taxi.
