Nags Head is the most extensive and developed city of Outer Banks. Adjacent to the Kill Devil Hills, it is difficult to distinguish physically. These two communities are with Kitty Hawk a single agglomeration. Nags Head is often regarded as the Outer Banks capital.The location is known for its high sand dunes, which is located miles from the coast. At times of explorations, it is they who guided the browsers to this region. During the colonial period, the pirates who inhabited the region used to hang a lantern on the head of a horse and lead it at the top of the highest dune, Jockey's Ridge. Light, visible from the broad, attracted browsers looking for a safe place to anchor. The unfortunate sank on the many coastal sand benches, and the ships were looted by local bandits. It is thought that this is a possible explanation of the name of the city, nag meaning "nag" in English. According to another version, this name would have been chosen in reference to the island of Nag's Head, located on the Thames in England. It was in the th century that the place became a fashionable seaside resort. Since then, it has continued to grow and attracts thousands of visitors from across the country every year.
