Ocracoke is a small island located south of Hatteras Island. This is probably the most removed island in Outer Banks. They can only be accessed by ferry, by the north, south and west. Because of the shootings surrounding its surroundings, it has always been difficult for mariners to access it, and the island began to be permanently populated by Europeans only in 1750. Before this period, the island was known for being a pirate reel, who could hide and enjoy relative tranquility. It was one of Edward Teach's landmarks, better known as Black Beard. After besieging the port of Charleston in South Carolina, he attracted the wrath of the colonial authorities, who sent an armed unit to eliminate it. Black Beard was killed on the island of Ocracoke on November 22, 1718, after a bloody battle. Today, the island depends mainly on tourism. It is filled and animated during the summer, and remains almost deserted in winter. Its dunes and wild beaches, its pelicans and wild horses, its relative isolation, its beautiful harbor surrounded by cafes and restaurants and its original historic heritage make it an indispensable destination for anyone who adventures in the Outer Banks.
