Merchants Millpond State Park is one of North Carolina's hidden gems. Located in the northeast of the state, close to the border with Virginia, this small state park is home to some of the most picturesque swamps in the world. Bald cypress beds and beech groves covered with Spanish moss dot the water bodies covered by layers of opaque green algae. To explore the swamps, nothing beats renting a canoe and running through the lush vegetation. A few alligators also populate the area but it is very rare to see them. It is also possible to hike and camp on site.
