The largest township in the region and the second largest in South Africa after Soweto. It is home to a third of Cape Town's population, over one and a half million people. Created by the apartheid government in 1984 and located 40 km from Cape Town, Khayelitsha, which means "new house" in Xhosa, is home to as many brick dwellings - notably in the Beverly Hills district, home to the new middle class - as tin shacks. The township is constantly renewing and expanding, as those unable to settle in Langa and Nyanga continue to swell the ranks. Solidarity tourism is on the increase, providing an insight into everyday life here.
