The fantastic basalt wall, which was formed more than 140 million years ago, stretches some 250 km between Sentinel and Xalanga and is 3,482 m high. The Drakensberg, "the mountain of the dragon", owes its name to a group of European explorers who believed in a monstrous creature living on the peaks. There are over two thousand caves painted by the Bushmen, the original inhabitants of the region. Although identified as early as 1593 by Portuguese shipwrecked sailors, the massif was not officially recognised until the 19th century. During their holidays, South Africans stay with their families in the KZN Wildlife camps or the Drakensberg's high altitude lodges.
