Kuremaë, with its 400 or so inhabitants, is a small village in the middle of the country, less than an hour from Narva by car, nestled between Lake Peipsi and the Gulf of Finland. The Kuremaë cemetery has been considered a sacred place since the Virgin Mary appeared in the 16th century at the foot of an oak tree that is said to be two thousand years old. Together with the nearby Pühtitsa Monastery (where overnight accommodation is available, contact the monastery), the cemetery has become a gathering place for the many Orthodox festivals. Don't miss to visit it, it is impressive.
