Narva, famous for its fortress, is a typical border town with Russia, but one that stands out from the crowd. Narva is linked to its sister town Ivangorod by a bridge with the symbolically powerful name of Druzhba ("friendship" in Russian). Until the Russian-Ukrainian war, all you had to do was cross the bridge, pass through customs and you'd find yourself in the big neighbor's house. Of course, the Russian spirit is very much alive in the town, but that doesn't mean Narva's inhabitants feel any less Estonian. They want their language and culture to be taken into account when it comes to Estonia's national identity.
