Hohenau could be translated as "high country" or "rolling valley" in German. The city is indeed located on a hill, near the Río Paraná. The first of the German colonies of Itapuá was founded on March 14, 1900, by a handful of Germanic adventurers who came from Brazil by the river. It is an agricultural town that offers tourists a museum on the first migrants, a nautical park and a fishing club, which organizes an international competition every year at the beginning of September. At the end of September, the "Feast of the Communities" also takes place, with cultural celebrations (gastronomy, typical dances...), representing the countries of origin of the local communities (Germany, Japan, Italy, Ukraine, Switzerland...).
