Travel Guide Obligado

Obligado is a municipality of about 20,000 inhabitants, located along Ruta 6, 35 km from Encarnación. This is the headquarters of the Cooperativa Colonias Unidas, an agro-industrial cooperative founded in 1953 and managed by the large German community. On these fertile lands, yerba mate ("La Rubia") and soybean oil are produced mainly. A lot of cattle breeding too. Every year, at the beginning of November, the Choppfest, a big beer festival (not to say binge drinking) is celebrated for five days, modelled on Munich's Oktoberfest. The festivities take place at the Club Alemán, with dances, music and traditional clothing, typical cuisine and hectolitres of beer in barrels.
