North of Trieste, after the beaches, the road to Grignano (SR14) becomes steep. You then reach Miramare Castle, an enchanting edifice that is the pride of Trieste. It's Trieste's most-visited monument, even though it's only ten kilometers from the city. Built in the 19th century as a private residence for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife, it bears the mark of its owner's romantic leanings and taste for eclectic architecture, combining Gothic, Renaissance and classical elements. It is surrounded by a magnificent park with manicured avenues and views over the Gulf of Trieste.
