Cuneo rises to an impressive height, hence its name(cuneo means "point"), between two rivers. Founded in the 12th century, the town became a fortified citadel in response to repeated attacks (seven between 1542 and 1799). During the Napoleonic era, Cuneo expanded outside its walls, but retained its chessboard layout. During the Second World War, it was a hotbed of resistance. Today, a pleasant town whose main source of income is agriculture, Cuneo dominates a territory with evocative landscapes, a land of truffles and fine wines. Its Tuesday market is one of the biggest and most popular in Piedmont.
