It was in 1817 that families emigrated from Massachusetts and settled in the area. Much later, in the 1860's, the place took its present name in honor of A. J. It was in 1926 that Route 66 passed through the village and brought it a certain notoriety. Today, Hamel is home to just under 600 residents. Located at the crossroads of several major roads, it was forgotten when Interstate I-55 was opened. People still stop by Weezy's, formerly Scotty's Route 66 Grill
