Sete Lagoas is a medium-sized town (230,000 inhabitants) of modern construction, located 60 km north of BH on the MG-424, which in itself is not particularly interesting. However, it is home to the Rei do Mato, a superb 998 m long cave (220 m are open to the public) that goes down to 40 m deep, and that can be visited on the road to Diamantina. The name Sete Lagoas comes from the lagoons that exist in the area: Lagoa Paulino, which is in the centre of the city, and the others: Boa Vista, Cercadinho, Catarina, Chácara, Matadouro and José Felix, which form a tourist complex in the area.
